1) Why is Mercedes helping Aristocrats to escape. Is it the money or something else?
I think it's because of the money, and the adventure, which he enjoys. The first people he rescued from France were a family of nobles he owed, as they had given him a loan to buy his first ship. But taking them over, he cleared that debt. Word spread that he was one of the few French merchants who would risk a guillotining themselves to help nobles escape, and he's been busy with it ever since.

2) Is he happy as a merchant or does he dream of higher things?
I think he's happy, he loves the sea and having command of his own boat- he loves travelling and the exotic places he's been. I don't think he'd be happy if you took him away from that sort of lifestyle, but perhaps if money was no object, he would be more able to sail for his own pleasure.

3) Although the revolution has brought him into danger he has also made a lot of new friends and gained a number of favours. In what circumstances would he call upon these new contacts?
I think if his financial situation called for it, or perhaps he had got himself into trouble with the French or English authorities, for instance if he had his shipping licence revoked, and needed someone with influence to get it back. That's actually a plot I'd like to play out, at some point.

4) What did Mercedes think the first time he met Aimé?
The first time he saw Aimé was as they boarded the ship to take them to England. He thought the boy looked rather frightened, but still very proud. The first time they spoke, which was that night in Mercedes's cabin. And then he thought Aimé was very very forward, but ever so enjoyable so it wasn't a problem!

5) If there was no revolution where in the world would Mercedes be right now?
I think he'd like to go back to India. He really enjoyed the exotic people and landscape and even the food, so if he could, he would go back there. He doubts Aimé would want to go with him, however!

Mercedes loved ports. He loved the vibrancy of the place, the movement, the noise, the taste of the sea mingled with spice, wine, silk, iron. Unlike London or Paris, to him, this place was the centre of the world.

He glanced about the street, and dusted off his hands. He had time while the ship's cargo (Indian spices, tea, silks and one or two home-sick travellers) was unloaded to talk and chat. In fact, after a month at sea, he was rather looking forward to talking to anyone who wasn't one of his employees.
